US options brokerage commission revenues to fall-study

U.S. options commission revenues for the brokerage industry are expected to decline this year and in 2010 due to competitive pressure in the sector and a drop in overall option volume, according to a study published by financial market research firm TABB Group.
The study, released on Monday, said options brokerage commission revenues are expected to reach $2.1 billion in 2010, marginally lower from an estimate of $2.2 billion in 2009.
The forecasts are down from an estimated $2.6 billion in 2008, when surging options volume and increased participation by asset managers drove brokerage commissions to new records.
'The bright spot was the level of commission revenues in 2008, but challenges lie ahead as the options industry contracts and competitive pressures increase,' said Andy Nybo, senior TABB analyst and the study's author.

Commission revenues will experience a compound annual growth rate decline of 10 percent by 2010, he said.
Although TABB Group estimates that option industry trading volume will fall by 17 percent in 2009, overall option turnover is expected to rise marginally in 2010.
Next year's modest rise underscores the increased use of options in trading strategies as 'normalcy' returns to the marketplace. More than 60 percent of buy-side traders plan to boost their use of options this year and deploy strategies suspended during last year's market volatility, the study said.
