Lakeshore forecast less optimistic

WEST MICHIGAN -- The Grand Rapids job market will improve slightly this spring, according to a Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. The news is less hopeful along the Lakeshore, where the number of Holland- and Grand Haven-area employers shedding workers is expected to outpace those increasing their work force from April through June.
Like Grand Rapids, slightly more employers nationwide are planning to hire compared to companies planning to reduce their work force. The forecast is the weakest employment outlook since the 1982 recession.

• In Grand Rapids-Wyoming area, 15 percent of companies interviewed plan to hire employees while 14 percent expect to reduce payrolls. Another 67 percent expect to maintain levels and 4 percent are not sure of hiring plans.
• In Holland-Grand Haven area, 14 percent of companies interviewed plan to add employees while 17 percent are prepared to eliminate positions. Another 64 percent expect to maintain and 5 percent don't know what they'll do.
